Training at Cowboy Stadium was delayed after a player found an unknown white powdery substance on the ground.  Training was suspended while police and Homeland Security were called in.  After analysis, experts determined the substance, while unfamiliar to most of the players, was in fact the goal line.  Practice will resume this afternoon.

Local Media Unsportsmanlike Conduct

Roy WIlliams, during a game

By Astonished Radio Listener

(ON 190, PROBABLY IRVING, BUT MAYBE DALLAS) – Listening to a local radio station, I witnessed Roy Williams being roughed up out-of-bounds. He was being asked about the 0-2 start – and what it meant.

And he made some comments which I thought were fair, but which the media apparently felt were encroachments. To wit: The 0-2 start is a good thing, to bring everyone down to earth. When pressed, he would not fault his team; rather, he pointed fingers at the fact that the media had anointed the Cowboys as likely Superbowl champs. During pre-season.

For this he was mercilessly made fun of by the afternoon Sports Radio 1310, The Ticket to the point where he did look and sound like a fool. But, paid media professionals can do that to you. If these same media types were on the field, in pads, they would be made to look extremely foolish by paid professionals as well.

Let’s examine a couple of points:

  1. The Cowboys have been touted as likely Superbowl Champs
  2. The Cowboys have a history of making assumptions about how good they are
  3. The Cowboys have not been a legitimate contender for a decade
  4. Nothing happened this off season that changed that

Roy is correct that the Cowboys needed a dose of reality – though he backed off that the harder he was pressed by the press. It surprised me the way they went after him. You couldn’t even call it stinging criticism on his part. The reaction was over the top, and continued this morning with carefully edited soundbites to make him sound even more ridiculous.

Come on guys, lighten up. Cheap shots don’t become you.

Da Bears Maul the Plowboys

By Chip Hansome

(ARLINGTON) – As the Cowboys fall to 0 – 2, let’s pause and reflect. The Cowboys have some good players. Romo – Austin, check. Romo – Bryant, looks promising. Romo – Williams, Williams would have been the hero in Game 1. Witten, check. Ware, Ratliff, check. They have some players that I’m not sure about – Barber and Jones, are they as good as I want them to be? Maybe. And, the team lacks depth, but that is not up to the players.

The Cowboys have some good coaches and some bad coaches. I won’t run them down – because it does not matter at this point. What the Cowboys don’t have is a good owner.

As long as Jerry Jones wants to pretend that he is not the head coach, and while he pretends that Wade Phillips is, the Cowboys of the last 10 years are what we are going to continue to see – a team of failed promise.

Wade is simply the defensive coordinator. Garrett should be the quarterback coach, maybe. If it is true that Jerry said “I decide playing time” then he is the head coach. It is obviously what he wants – after all, he let go head coach Jimmy after he won two Superbowls. Generally coaches get released for losing, not for winning. But, there you have it. Notice I said after “he”, Jimmy, won two Superbowls. That is what Jones cannot stand. He can’t stand it.

No true head coach, one that actually sees himself as a head coach, will work for Jerry Jones. Which is why Garrett (whom no one courted this off season, he’s over-paid) will be head coach after this season, and why the Cowboys will suck for several years. One day, as Jerry does his best imitation of Tom Hicks, he will sell. Probably to Mark Cuban. Won’t that be a joy?

Meanwhile, we have fan reaction to the latest “effort” below.

“You’re number one, Jerry!”
